Old Master Painting in Oil

with Mario Colon

ALL LEVELS

This course makes use of one of the most time honored traditions in Western art: the act of copying in order to learn. Learning through copying, is one of the fastest and most effective ways to learn painting technique from master painters long since deceased. Students make use of masterworks in order to make a highly faithful reproduction of said work in order to learn it’s technical secrets.

Learning Outcomes:
Students learn painting techniques by reverse engineering favorite masterworks in order to acquire the skill sets used to create the work by the original artist.

The student finds through reverse engineering of master paintings a diverse set of skills such as the understanding of linear perspective, anatomy, composition, light and color theory, and a wide array of sub-disciplines within the tradition of Western art.

Students may either bring their own materials, from the materials list, or have the option of the KAC supplying them at an additional cost.

Introductory Portraiture Drawing

with David Bonagurio

About the Instructor:
David Bonagurio is a painter living and working in Utica, New York who has exhibited locally and internationally. He is an avid portraiture artist who believes it to be one of the more difficult and rewarding practices in art.

Learn the basics of portraiture drawing. This class aims to provide a basic structure for an approach that will make the handling portraiture accessible for artists of all levels. We will work through the basic concepts of form and light while studying a practice of portraiture. The study of the human form has been one of mankind’s artistic obsessions since we began applying pigment to the walls of caves. When that study becomes less about just a human form and more about an individual, Portraiture is the outcome. We will cover the basic anatomy and structure of the face and look for the individual within the form.
